Just now one of my friend’s friend called up from Japan. He is kinda new to SQL Server. He installed SQL Server 2008 in his laptop and was playing with AdventureWorks database. He wanted to see the structure of the table “SalesLT.Product“.

He used the following command: sp_help SalesLT.Product

But he was getting an error:

Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 1
Incorrect syntax near ‘.’.

I changed the command to sp_help ‘SalesLT.Product’ . And it worked.

He was very happy and thanked me  a lot. Although it was a quick fix and probably most of you know this already but I specifically wrote this article for new developers in SQL Server . Hope it will help them.

Note: You can also use the shortcut ALT+F1 to see the structure of any objects in SQL Server.
