Recently in my organization Sys-Administrators changed the name of machines where SQL Server was installed. After starting SQL Server, we need to take care of the sysservers table in the master database. SQL Server stores the local machine name here and this will not match if we have renamed the machine in Windows.

There is an easy fix for this:

— Check the existing server

SELECT @@SERVERNAME

Next step is to drop the existing server name:

EXEC sp_dropserver ‘SUBHRO-B9D048C7’
GO

Then we have to change the name of the server with new name:

EXEC sp_addserver ‘subhropc.’, ‘local’
GO

We have to the restart SQL Services ( I prefer to do it through command prompt):

Then we will start the SQL Services again:

Lets check the new Server name:

SELECT @@SERVERNAME

Let me know if you any confusion.

Cheers
